JIWAKA, HELA TO GET RADIO
STATIONS: BASIL
PORT MORESBY: The Minister responsible for radio,
Honorable Sam Basil today used the World Radio Day to indicate that new Jiwaka
and Hela provinces will have a radio station facility each.
Today is World Radio Day. Across the globe celebrations are being held
to mark the day.
In the country, Minister for Communications, Information Technology
and Energy, Sam Basil took time off his busy schedule to participate yet in a
small way to recognize its significance.
Flanked by heads of organizations and department which come under his
belt, Mr Basil went to an NBC radio talkback show this morning.
He pointed out the significance of marking the day, saying Radio is a
medium of communication which reach the widest audience including the vulnerable
members of communities in the remotest parts of the country.
This announcement comes amidst a work plan and impact projects for the
ICT and Energy sectors which the O’Neill-Abel government will undertake under
his ministry.
He stated that the National Energy policy was before the Cabinet for
approval, saying it will make way for the establishment of National Energy
Authority.
Basil says radio provides a platform for public debate for
development, education, information and sharing of information to change the
lives of fellow citizens.
Amongst others, he also outlined the impacts projects NBC radio would
be undertaking and they include;
1. Restoration of Medium and Short waves radio
bands;
2. Analog to digital migration;
3. Modern office building of NBC headquarter
4. Establishment of NBC radio in new Hela and
Jiwaka province
5. BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) arrangement for
NBC assets
The theme for this year is ‘Radio and Sports.’
Basil said he was expecting this year to be yet another year of
sporting events, adding sports has the power to unite the people in cultural
diversity.
He has called on the radio stations in the country to market the
beauty of sports in the country.
Acting Secretary for the Department of Communications and Information
Paulias Korni has urged fellow citizens to continue turning in to radio
stations for information, education and entertainment as it reaches the most
rural areas of the country.
NBC Managing Director Kora Nou says NBC is ready to undertake major
project the O’Neill-Abel government will undertake under the ministry.
